Historical Context
The Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 to 1935 to commemorate the end of World War I and the restoration of peace. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it features a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle at rest perched on a rock with the word “PEACE” on the reverse. Production ended in 1935 but a small quantity was minted in 1964 and subsequently melted.
Composition and Silver Content
Each Peace Dollar contains 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams total. The silver content per coin is 0.7734 troy ounces, matching the Morgan Dollar and providing substantial precious metal value in a beautiful, historic package.
Collectibility
Peace Dollars are popular with collectors for their attractive design and historical significance. Key dates include the 1928, 1934-S, and the extremely rare 1964-D (nearly all melted). Most common dates trade close to melt value in circulated grades, while uncirculated examples can command significant premiums.
