Historical Context
The Morgan Dollar is one of the most iconic and collectible American silver coins. Designed by George T. Morgan, it was minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. The coin features Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with spread wings on the reverse. Many Morgan Dollars were melted down under the Pittman Act of 1918.
Composition and Silver Content
Each Morgan Dollar contains 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams total. The silver content per coin is 0.7734 troy ounces - the highest silver content of any regular-issue U.S. coin. This substantial precious metal content makes them valuable even in worn condition.
Collectibility
Morgan Dollars are highly collectible, with certain dates and mint marks commanding significant premiums well above melt value. Key dates include the 1893-S, 1895, and Carson City (CC) issues. Even common dates in uncirculated condition can be worth considerably more than their silver content. Many collectors and investors seek these coins for both their numismatic and intrinsic value.
