Historical Context
The Roosevelt Dime was introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. Roosevelt was chosen in part because of his association with the March of Dimes campaign against polio. The coin was designed by John R. Sinnock.
Composition and Silver Content
Each Roosevelt Dime minted from 1946-1964 contains 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.5 grams total. The silver content per coin is 0.0723 troy ounces. Note that Roosevelt Dimes minted after 1964 contain no silver.
Collectibility
While most circulated Roosevelt Dimes from this era carry only their silver melt value, certain varieties and mint marks can have numismatic premiums. These coins remain popular for junk silver investment due to their recognizable design and consistent silver content.
